History

Education for all – irrespective of caste, creed, religion or class was the prime reason for establishing ‘KanahiyaLal Trust’ on 4th July 1936. Late Rai Sahib KanahiyaLal was a Visionary Philanthropist, who donated all his properties for the cause of ‘Education’ in the city of Roorkee.

KL Trust started with a humble beginning in the year 1936 with a middle school, which later on became high school (duly recognised by Board of Education, UP). The school was named as KanahiyaLal High School. In the year 1950, it was upgraded to intermediate level (duly affiliated with UP Board of Education – in Science and Arts Streems). In order to cater the needs of the youth – both girls and boys, the KL Trust started a technical institute for providing diploma in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. This institute was called as ‘KanahiyaLal Technical Institute’ (KTI). KTI was established in the year 1954 and was duly recognised by Board of Technical Education, UP.’ The KL Trust in the year 1960 established a degree college called KL DAV Degree College, Roorkee.To begin with the college was affiliated with Agra University, Agra (as it was then called and had the territorial jurisdiction).Lateron, Department of Education also stated (B.Ed.) KL DAV Degree College was later on upgraded to post graduate level in Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Computer, Micro Biology, Zoology and Mathematics Departments. The PG College is running both types of courses namely, (i) Regular and (ii) Evening Classes (self-financing basis).

At the time of establishing of KL DAV Degree College in the year 1960 original jurisdiction of Agra University extended over to United Provinces of Agra, Central India and Rajputana. All degree and post graduate colleges in the Meerut Division of the Uttar Pradesh were affiliated with Agra University. Students passing out were awarded degree(s) by the Agra University.

Since the dawn of civilization, man has striven to explain several mysteries of the universe and to justify his existence in it. Significant progress has been made over the last few decades due to the advancements in Science and Technology. It has benefitted the mankind in terms of providing comforts and thus making life easier and faster but the society is paying exorbitant price in terms of falling physical and mental health, peace of mind as well as moral and social values in achieving this remarkable prosperity. Not only this, industrialization has become the major cause of deterioration of environment. It has, thus, now become the need of the hour to redefine success in the contemporary world which is teemed with cut throat competition. To keep pace with the rapidly changing society, K.L.D.A.V. Post Graduate College, Roorkee is making conscientious efforts by organizing Information Dissemination (ID) Lecture Series named after Shri Ishwar, Dayal (ID), the Founder Principal of the college, to touch the various spheres of higher education dealing with the burning issues of the contemporary society related to powerful but peaceful applications of scientific advancements as well as preserving the environment and inculcating moral values in the youth.

After retirement of Shri. Ishwar dayal, the Founder Principal of the college in 1972, Dr. R. Chandra took over the charge of principal ship. He was on the chair from 06.08.1972 to 30.06.1987. Dr. R.S.Gupta took over the charge from Dr. R. Chandra on 01.07.1987. After retirement of Dr.  R.S.Gupta in 07.10.1987 Shri. H.M. Mehrotra took over the charge of Principal. At the same time the students were encouraged to actively participate in socio-cultural activities, NCC, NSS etc. After retirement of Shri H.M. Mehrotra on 30.06.1988 Shri O.P. Tyagi took over the charge in july 1988 and retired on 31.10.1988. From 01.11.1988 to 30.061996 Shri Prem Shankar Srivastava and from 01.07.1996 to 26.11.1999 Shri Ram Dev Tyagi was giving their services as Principal ship of the college. When Dr V.K. Maheshwari took the baton as Principal on 27.11.1999, the other era of sustained progress started. He had initiated for opening some postgraduate courses i.e. M.Sc. Maths and Chemistry. University constituted a panel for the same and visited college in presence of Dr. Maheshwari. Dr. Devendra Gupta was the Principal from 01.07.2002 to 10.07.2003, after retirement of Dr. Maheshwari. The session 2002-2003 witnessed the up gradation, by having Self-Finance PG classes in M.Sc. Maths and Chemistry. Between the periods of 11.07.2003 to 18.08.2008, the up gradation, by having Self-Finance PG classes in M.Sc. Physics, Zoology and Botany under the Principal ship of Dr. P.K. Gupta. During his term emphasized on excellence in teaching and quality education. After retirement of Dr. P.K. Gupta on 18.08.2008 Dr. B.L.Agarwal took over the charge on 19.08.2008. During his period B.Sc. computer and Microbiology (Self finance) were started in the college. Dr. Prabhat Singh joined on 04.02.2009 in permanent capacity. He has given his service till 07.11.2009. Dr. B.L. Agarwal took the charge again after Dr. Prabhat Singh. After the B.L.Agarwal, Dr. Yashoda Mittal took the charge of the college on 16th Dec. 2010 in permanent capacity. Dynamic, energetic, visionary with an excellent managerial skill, Dr Y. Mittal’s priority rested on developing a worn-down infrastructural facility and to tackle serious issues of indiscipline, creation of a conducive academic atmosphere in the campus. K.L.D.A.V. (P.G.) College has now the well-equipped Labs, Computer Labs. All class rooms and laboratories are connected with Public Address System and internet connectivity has been provided to all the departments and offices.

Under merged scheme from UGC the college has imparting free coaching for the SC, ST, OBC, minorities and general students for preparation of the competitive Examination of Civil Services, NET/SLET, Banking and other services. It is matter of great pride that our students are selected in Civil Services, GATE, NET, GSI and other competitive examinations.

Besides teaching, the teachers and scholars of the college are now actively engaged to pursue research work. In May, 2011 two National seminars sponsored by UGC and supported by CSIR, UCOST, ICMR, BOITAC were organized by the Department of Chemistry and Zoology. Two teachers visited foreign countries to present their research papers and some Minor and Major research projects have also been sanctioned by UGC to the teachers of different departments. A grand and dignified convocation was organized on 4th November 2011 on the eve of Golden Jubliee year of the college. Now the college has full strength of 3200 students.

The alumni of the college have shown outstanding performance in their chosen fields and many of them are in key and very prestigious positions in different parts of the country and abroad. Now the college is a center for academic excellence and achievements and is one of the finest institution for science and Education.
